&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, people behave badly when they are not held personally accountable &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Second, people behave badly when nobody raises a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=311\">critical<\/a> voice &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Third, people behave badly when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=141\">human<\/a> beings over whom they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=34\">power<\/a> are dehumanized and de-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=651\">individualized<\/a>. &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=2049\">probably<\/a> cannot produce people who are firm against every manipulation, but we can produce a social <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=118\">culture<\/a> that is itself a powerful surrounding &#8216;situation&#8217;, strengthening the tendencies that militate against stigmatisation and domination. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>What schools can and should do to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=565\">citizens<\/a> in and for a healthy democracy?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop students&#8217; capacity to see the world from the view-point of other people &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Teach &#8230; that weakness is not shameful &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Develop &#8230; genuine concern for others, both near and distant<\/li>\n<li>Undermine the tendency to shrink from minorities of various kinds in disgust &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Teach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=580\">real<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=487\">true<\/a> things about other groups &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Treat &#8230; each <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=111\">child<\/a> as a responsible agent &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Promote critical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=502\">thinking<\/a> &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Knowledge is no guarantee of good behavior, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=105\">ignorance<\/a> is a virtual guarantee of bad behavior. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The task of teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=4124\">intelligent<\/a> world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=598\">citizenship<\/a> &#8230; requires understanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=467\">immigration<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=578\">history<\/a> &#8230; All good historical study of one&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=537\">own<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=147\">nation<\/a> requires some grounding in world history. &#8230; We cannot understand where even a simple soft drink comes from without thinking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=122\">lives<\/a> in other nations. &#8230; Curricula should be carefully planned from an early age to impart an ever richer and more nuanced knowledge of the world, its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=481\">histories<\/a> and cultures. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Responsible citizenship requires &#8230; the ability to asses <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">historical<\/span> evidence, to use and to think critically about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">economic<\/span> principles, to assess accounts of social justice, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=2563\">speak<\/a> a foreign <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">language<\/span>, to appreciate the complexities of the major world <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">religions<\/span>. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Citizens cannot relate well to the complex world around them by factual knowledge and logic alone. The third ability of the citizen &#8230; is what we can call the narrative imagination. &#8230; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Play<\/span> teaches people to be capable of living with others without control &#8230; It is all too easy to see another person as just a body &#8230; which &#8230; we can use for our ends &#8230; It is an achievement to see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=415\">soul<\/a> in that body, and that achievement is supportes by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=24\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">poetry<\/span><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=119\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">arts<\/span><\/a>, which ask us to wonder about the inner world of that shape we see &#8211; and, too, to wonder about ourselves and our own depths. &#8230; The role of arts in schools and colleges is twofold. They cultivate capacities for play and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=67\">empathy<\/a> in a general way, and they address particular cultural blind spots &#8230; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Music<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dance<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">drawing<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">theater<\/span> &#8230; supply both children and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=509\">adults<\/a> with &#8230; positive ways of relating to one another, and joy in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woydt.be\/blog\/?p=50\">educational<\/a> endeavor. &#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>aus: Martha C.
